JINDAL STEEL & POWER LIMITED (JSPL), part of US$ 2 billion Jindal Organisation, redefines dynamism. JSPL is today the largest producer of coal based sponge iron producer in the world with captive Coal, Iron Ore, and Power sources. What started as an initiative to produce much needed Sponge Iron for local steel mills and foundries and thereafter semi-finished products for large number of secondary steel rolling mills in the country, is today shaping up as a world-class facility for producing value-added products, bringing world’s best to India, thus acting as a catalyst for economic development and growth.
Recognizing the current era of global competition and rapid technological advances, this ISO9002 and ISO 14001 certified company expanded its production capabilities at Raigarh in the state of Chattisgarh, India in the beginning of year 2003 to bring in products, which will be vital to the growth of infrastructure and transportation sectors in the country.
A state-of-the-art Rail & Universal Beam Mill (RUBM) with an installed capacity of 0.75 million tons per annum was commissioned in Q1-2003. Upgradation of upstream facilities was also done out to produce Beam Blanks, and bigger Blooms in addition to existing range of slabs, billets, and rounds.
JSPL also entered into a Technical Collaboration Agreement with JFE Corporation of Japan (earlier known as NKK Corporation) for technology transfer to produce superior quality, world’s longest rails of 120m finished length, along-with Parallel Flange Beams, Columns and Sheet Piles for the 1st time in the country in conjunction with commissioning of this mill. The agreement covers “Know-How” transfer encompassing steel-making, secondary refining, continuous casting upto rolling & finishing of long rails, Universal beams & Columns and Sheet Piles. Rail & Universal Beam Mill at JSPL introduced the following products in India -
a. World’s longest 120m Finished length rails, and Flash-butt welded rail panels upto 480 meters length.
b. Hot Rolled Parallel Flange Universal Beams & Columns in medium and heavy sizes.
Besides, JSPL also produces following –
a. Indian channel sections in size 250, 300, & 400mm
b. Indian Crane Rails in size CR-80 and CR-100
c. Cathode bars.
In the first year of inception (April’03 to March’04), Rail & Universal Beam mill at JSPL produced over 100,000 MT and despatched over 85,000 MT of finished steel. From April’04 to Dec’05, over 1,45,000 MT of finished steel has been produced, and over 1,48,000 MT has been despatched. Of this, about 33,500 MT have been towards exports.
PARALLEL FLANGE BEAMS & COLUMNS
Parallel Flange Beams (H-Beams) & Columns are being produced by JSPL for the 1st time in the country with Universal Rolling method to facilitate ease and speed of Steel Intensive Construction by virtue of these sections being cost effective as compared to traditionally available tapered flange sections.
Areas of application for Parallel Flange Beams and Columns include construction of bridges, Multi-storeyed residential and commercial Buildings, Multi-storeyed Car Parks, Flyovers, and Industrial structures such as Power Plants, Refineries, Off-shore Platforms , material handling equipments/ structures, etc.

Rails from JSPL can be supplied in customised finished lengths ranging from 13m to 120m and as Flash butt Welded Rail Panels from 240m upto 480m, in conjunction with the demands of Indian Railways and International market.
Rails produced at JSPL-Raigarh conform not only to Indian Railway IRS T-12-96 specification but also international specifications such as EN 13674-1, AREA, UIC 860(O) and BS 90 A/R with continuously cast steel in required grades of 700, 900A, 900B and 1100, prevalent across the globe. Rails are handled only upon completion of Final Inspection using 11 individually synchronized hoists with a rail-grip system to lift upto 3nos of 120m rails simultaneously onto, either rail wagons for delivery, or to storage area for stocking, or to feed the new Long rail welding line.
